Astra / Gulfstream 1125 SP Jets for Sale — Israeli Engineering Meets American Refinement
The Astra 1125 SP — marketed in its later iterations as the Gulfstream 1125 Astra SP — represents one of the most distinctive and capable super-light jets ever designed, born from an entirely different design philosophy than the American and European jets that dominated its market segment. Developed by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) in the 1980s as an evolution of the earlier Westwind family, the Astra broke dramatically from conventional jet design by using a low-wing, swept, supercritical wing profile that gave it speed and efficiency advantages over competing straight-wing jets of comparable size. The result was a jet that outperformed many competitors in cruise speed and fuel efficiency while delivering a genuinely usable stand-up cabin in a package smaller and cheaper to operate than midsize aircraft.
The Supercritical Wing Advantage
The Astra 1125's defining technical innovation is its supercritical wing — a wing design originally developed for commercial transports to delay the onset of compressibility effects at high cruise speeds. In the Astra, this translates to the ability to cruise efficiently at Mach 0.80 or beyond with lower fuel consumption than competing jets using conventional wing profiles. The wing's low-wing mounting position also provides excellent ground clearance for the Garrett TFE731-3A-200G turbofan engines, simplifying ground servicing and reducing FOD ingestion risk compared to pod-mounted designs. Maximum cruise speed of approximately 800 km/h and range approaching 3,200 nautical miles in SP configuration make the 1125 a genuinely capable intercontinental performer in the super-light category.
Cabin and Comfort
The 1125 SP's cabin accommodates up to eight passengers in a stand-up (for most adults) interior that belies the aircraft's compact external dimensions. The pressurization system maintains a comfortable cabin altitude, and the aircraft's smooth cruise at optimal altitudes provides a refined travel experience. Avionics are Collins Pro Line, with later examples featuring Collins Pro Line 21 upgrades that significantly modernize the flight deck and improve situational awareness.
Maintenance and Ownership
Gulfstream assumed support responsibility for the Astra family following its acquisition of IAI's business jet operations, providing parts availability and maintenance manual support through an established network. The TFE731 engine — one of the most common business jet turbofans ever produced — benefits from an enormous global maintenance infrastructure with competitive overhaul pricing. Enrollment on Honeywell's MSP (Maintenance Service Plan) is available and strongly recommended for budget predictability.
