Aircraft for Sale in Sussex, New Jersey — Northwest NJ Aviation

Sussex is a borough of approximately 2,000 in Sussex County, New Jersey, located in the northwestern corner of the state in the Kittatinny Valley. Surrounded by the Kittatinny Mountains to the west and the valley farmland to the east, Sussex County is the most rural county in New Jersey. General aviation in the area is served by Sussex Airport (KFWN), a small general aviation airfield that serves the local community and offers an escape from the congested New York metropolitan area airspace just to the southeast.

Northwest Jersey Mountain and Valley Flying

Sussex County offers a refreshing contrast to the dense metropolitan airspace of the New York area, which dominates NJ aviation just 50 miles to the southeast. The Kittatinny Ridge provides visual soaring conditions, and Sussex County's valleys, farms, and lakes create a visually appealing VFR flying environment. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area borders the county to the west, providing a spectacular scenic corridor along the Delaware River accessible by air. High Point State Park, New Jersey's highest point at 1,803 feet, is a local landmark visible from the air. Sussex Airport (KFWN) has a reputation as a friendly community airport and is known for glider and banner towing operations in addition to standard GA activities. Pilots based here benefit from VFR flying relatively free from the immediate congestion of Teterboro (KTEB) and the New York Class B environment, though awareness of the Newark (KEWR) and Allentown-Bethlehem corridor airspace is important for cross-country planning. The area's rural character and proximity to the Poconos resort region create recreational flying opportunities.
  • Gliders and motorgliders: Excellent ridge soaring along Kittatinny Ridge.
  • Cessna 172/182: Standard GA at Sussex Airport KFWN.
  • Light sport aircraft: Economical local flying in NJ lake country.
  • Piper Cherokee: Cross-country aircraft for New York area trips.
