By using two large counter-rotating rotors instead of the conventional main-rotor/tail-rotor arrangement, the Chinook eliminates the tail rotor — freeing the full output of both engines for lift rather than anti-torque compensation. This translates directly into payload: the CH-47F can internally carry approximately 10,000 kg of cargo or sling load approximately 11,000 kg on its triple-hook cargo system. No single-rotor helicopter of comparable overall size approaches these numbers, making the Chinook a unique capability in markets where large loads must move by air.
Civilian Chinook Operations
- Offshore oil and gas — The Boeing Vertol 234 Commercial Chinook served North Sea offshore operations with Columbia Helicopters and British Airways Helicopters, carrying large crews and cargo to distant platforms in conditions that tested the limits of helicopter capability.
- Heavy external lift — Construction, tower erection, pipeline laying, power line stringing, and logging operations use Chinooks where loads exceed the capacity of any other civil helicopter.
