Cessna 175 Skylark for Sale — The Geared-Engine Skyhawk
The Cessna 175 Skylark occupies a unique niche in the Cessna family — a four-seat high-wing aircraft that used the Continental GO-300 geared engine to deliver 175 horsepower, providing meaningfully better performance than the 172's O-300 while sharing the same basic airframe and flight characteristics. Produced from 1958 to 1962, the 175 was Cessna's attempt to offer a performance step between the standard 172 and the more expensive Cessna 180 — a logical market position that attracted buyers who wanted more climb rate and cruise speed without the higher acquisition and operating costs of the larger model.
The GO-300 Geared Engine
The Continental GO-300's geared configuration allowed a smaller displacement engine to produce more horsepower than a direct-drive equivalent while keeping the propeller tip speed within efficient limits. In practice, this gave the 175 a performance advantage over the 172 that pilots noticed in initial climb rate and cruise altitude capability. The GO-300's maintenance history requires awareness — the gearbox adds complexity compared to direct-drive engines, and mechanics with specific Continental GO-300 experience are somewhat less common than those familiar with the more widely-used O-300 and O-320 families.
