2019 Cirrus Vision SF50-G2 used
- February 14, 2023
Cirrus Aircraft fundamentally changed the conversation about personal jet ownership when the Vision SF50 entered service in 2016. For the first time, a genuine single-engine jet was available that had been designed from the outset for single-pilot, owner-operator use — not adapted from an existing twin-engine design, not requiring type ratings inaccessible to most general aviation pilots, but a purpose-built personal jet that a Cirrus SR22 pilot could transition to with a realistic training investment. The Vision SF50 democratized jet travel in a way that no previous aircraft had achieved, opening the personal jet market to a completely new segment of buyers who had previously accepted that jet ownership was beyond their reach.
Three characteristics distinguish the Vision SF50 from every other jet in the market. First, the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) — the whole-aircraft parachute that has saved hundreds of lives in Cirrus piston aircraft — is standard equipment on the SF50, providing an ultimate safety backstop available in no other jet. Second, the single Williams FJ33-5A turbofan engine generates only enough thrust to move the aircraft forward while its distinctive V-tail and efficient airframe provide the lift — a simplicity of propulsion that makes the aircraft genuinely manageable for a single pilot without a co-pilot requirement. Third, the Garmin G2000 touch-screen avionics suite, coupled with Garmin's Autoland capability in properly equipped aircraft, provides a level of automation and situational awareness that supports safe single-pilot jet operation even in challenging conditions.
The Vision SF50 carries five passengers plus pilot at cruise speeds of approximately 311 mph (270 knots) to altitudes up to 28,000 feet, with a range of approximately 1,200 statute miles on standard fuel. This performance positions it ideally for the regional business travel and personal transportation missions that represent the vast majority of general aviation trips — distances of 300 to 800 miles where the SF50's speed advantage over piston aircraft saves meaningful time while its operating costs remain dramatically lower than those of twin-engine jets.
As a relatively young aircraft type — first deliveries in 2016 — the SF50 pre-owned market is growing but still modest in total inventory. Low-time examples from early production years represent excellent value for buyers who want the Vision's capabilities at below-new prices, while later examples with Autoland capability command premiums that reflect this safety-enhancing technology. Engine program enrollment on the Williams FJ33 through Tap Blue or equivalent coverage is a significant valuation factor.
