Mikoyan MiG-21UM for Sale — Soviet Two-Seat Supersonic Jet Trainer
The Mikoyan MiG-21UM is the two-seat combat trainer variant of the legendary MiG-21 Fishbed, one of the most widely produced supersonic jet fighters in history and the backbone of Soviet and Warsaw Pact air power throughout the Cold War. Designated "Mongol-B" by NATO, the MiG-21UM provided Warsaw Pact pilots with a dual-control supersonic trainer that retained the combat-capable systems of the single-seat MiG-21 while adding a second cockpit for the instructor. Today, surviving MiG-21UM aircraft in civilian ownership represent some of the most exotic and historically significant jet warbird acquisitions available, offering genuine supersonic performance and authentic Soviet Cold War heritage in a two-seat configuration that allows a second occupant to share the experience. Airplane Trade maintains listings for the Mikoyan MiG-21UM for qualified buyers worldwide.
The MiG-21 Family and the UM Variant
The MiG-21 entered Soviet service in 1959 and was produced in more than 11,000 examples across dozens of variants, making it one of the most-built supersonic aircraft in history. The delta-winged design, originally optimized for Mach 2 performance and short-field operations, proved adaptable enough to serve in air superiority, ground attack, reconnaissance, and training roles with dozens of air forces across the Soviet bloc, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The MiG-21 saw combat in virtually every major conflict of the Cold War era and remains in active service with several air forces today.
The MiG-21UM was developed in the late 1960s as a replacement for the earlier MiG-21U and MiG-21US two-seat variants, incorporating the more powerful Tumansky R-13F-300 engine and updated avionics of the contemporary single-seat MiG-21MF. The tandem two-seat configuration places the instructor in the raised rear cockpit with adequate forward visibility, and dual controls allow the instructor to intervene if the student exceeds safe flight parameters. Like other MiG-21 variants, the UM is capable of supersonic flight and Mach 2 in a dive, making it genuine performance aircraft by any standard.

Civilian Operation of the MiG-21UM
The MiG-21UM has found a dedicated following in the civilian jet warbird community, particularly among operators who have acquired former Warsaw Pact aircraft following the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Eastern European nations including Romania, Czech Republic, and Hungary retired significant numbers of MiG-21s during their NATO accession periods, and many of these aircraft entered the civilian market through legitimate surplus sales.
Operating a MiG-21UM requires access to the R-13 engine overhaul network, which is concentrated in Eastern Europe and Russia but accessible to western operators through specialist intermediaries. Pilot training for the type is available from several Eastern European operators who have maintained qualified instructor cadres. Insurance requires specialist underwriters experienced in Soviet-era military jet operations, and documentation requirements for import into the United States include detailed BATFE and State Department review for any former combat aircraft.
